Dartmouth pulled even at six late in the third quarter

ITHACA, N.Y. — The Dartmouth men's lacrosse team gave No. 1 Cornell all it could handle on Saturday, pulling even at six late in the third quarter, but the Big Red scored four of the next five goals, on the way to beating the Big Green, 10-8. Mason Morel made 14 saves in goal, helping hold the nation's leading offense that was leading the nation entering the day to a season-low 10 goals. The Big Red had been averaging 16.33.

"Very proud of our team's effort today," said Dartmouth head coach Sean Kirwan. "While we are certainly not satisfied with the result, the effort, energy and belief never quit. I personally cannot thank this senior and fifth-year group for everything they have given this program throughout their careers and specifically this year. They all can leave with their heads held high knowing that they left this program cleaner than they found it."

A balanced offensive attack saw eight goals from seven different goal scorers. Emmett Paradine was the only multi-goal scorer, netting a pair of tallies. Alex Jessey had two points via a goal and assist. Colin McGill scored a goal to end his collegiate career on an incredible 40-game goal streak dating back to his rookie season. He leaves as the program's second all-time leading goal scorer (117).

The defense also saw a balanced effort, with seven caused turnovers from seven different Big Green players. Joe Azelby added a game-high five groundballs.

After a 2-0 Cornell lead, the Big Green answered with two straight goals, from Paradine and Jessey to tie the score late in the first quarter.

The Big Red responded to go up 4-2, but three consecutive Dartmouth gave the Big Green their first lead of the day. They were scored by Nate Davis, Jackson Monte and Paradine for a 5-4 advantage at 6:37 of the second quarter.

Cornell went into halftime with a 6-5 lead, but after more than 10 minutes without a goal from either side, William Stahl went hard to the cage for the equalizer, making it 6-6 at 4:02 of the third.

Two Big Red tallies, with 15 and 10 seconds left in the third, hurt, sending Cornell to the fourth leading 8-6.

Tyler Juhlin converted a goal at 8:10 to get Dartmouth back within 8-7, but Cornell goals at 7:08 and 6:06 provided enough insurance.

Cornell finished with a 41-31 edge in shots, while the Big Red held a 32-20 advantage in groundballs. Morel's 14 saves came across Cornell's Wyatt Knust, who made six. Cornell won 16-of-22 faceoffs, led by a 12-of-18 effort from Jack Cascadden.

The Big Green wrap up their season with an 8-5 record, marking their most wins since 2006. With Ivy League victories over Penn and Brown, it's also the first time they've had multiple Ivy wins since 2010.
